The Story

In a natural extension of the Omaha community’s civic pride and longstanding support for Offutt Air Force Base, community leaders began a campaign to develop a new state-of-the-art facility that would not only house SAC aircraft and artifacts but also provide a venue for the restoration of aircraft, preservation, and display of historical artifacts, and the education of future generations in the areas of history, deterrence, technology, and science. The museum moved to its current location in 1998.

The museum is embarking on a multi-faceted effort to make full and best use of its facility. Heading into its 25th year of existence and under the new leadership of retired U. S. Astronaut Clayton Anderson, the museum seeks to continue the recognition and appreciation of its heritage as the keeper of SAC’s history while exploring ways to better “tell the story” of its unique artifacts and SAC’s efforts to preserve the peace and win the Cold War. Few museums are as well-positioned to tell the story of this critical time in America’s history.

However, we are not just a Cold War Museum.

The Future
and Beyond

For the past 25 years, the SAC Aerospace Museum has been teaching our visitors Science, Technology, Engineering, Arts, and Math (STEAM) by telling the story of how SAC— and later STRATCOM— used the strength of deterrence to help win the Cold War.

Re-vitalization becomes the focus, intending to turn the SAC Aerospace Museum into the Midwest’s premier museum/science center destination. By targeting parents, children, extended families, schools, our military, and retirees, it is time to be sure our direction, based on a solid history of deterrence, is also pointing strongly toward the stars.

With prestigious universities and their accompanying stellar engineering, medical, and space/cyber and telecommunications law programs, well within its impactful footprint, the museum must rise to the challenge of uniting its past with our space future, educating both youth and adults as we meet our Nation’s need for technological innovation to secure both our economy and national defense for future generations.

The story will be about science and space exploration, technological innovation, and a genuine commitment to Americans’ rigorous education and training to preserve our Nation’s security and enhance its prosperity. New exhibits –temporary and permanent– and special events will continue to provide additional unique experiences for the museum’s members and visitors.
